An EV charger is a tool used to charge the batteries found in electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. EV chargers work by pulling electricity from the grid and sending it to the vehicle it is connected to.

EV chargers can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 20 hours to fully charge a vehicle. The charge time of an EV battery depends on several factors, including the type of charger used, the EV battery’s size, the vehicle’s maximum charging rate, and even your area’s weather.

EV chargers can be categorized based on location, host type, or power rating.

When differentiating EV charger options based on location, you have destination chargers (chargers installed in homes or establishments) and on-the-go chargers (high-voltage public charging stations usually found in petrol stations and on highways).

When differentiating EV charging options by power ratings, you have three levels:

Level 1: These chargers are often sold together with their corresponding EV. They are the slowest chargers, taking up to 20 hours to reach a full charge. These chargers plug into a standard 120V power outlet and are often left to charge overnight in the garage.
Level 2: These chargers can be plugged into a 240V outlet and charge up to seven times faster than Level 1 charges. Installation of a Level 2 charging port typically requires some electrical work by a licensed electrician.
Level 3: These fast chargers use a voltage range of 200 to 600 VDC and can take just 30 minutes to refill an EV battery. These can be found in paid charging stations at petrol stations and on highways.
