What EV Models Are Compatible With Portable Chargers

In 2026, Australian EV owners no longer need to worry about compatibility issues as Australia has standardised the Type 2 (Mennekes) plug for all new vehicles sold. Almost 100% of the new and late-model EV fleet are now compatible with portable chargers.

The following popular models all use the universal Type 2 port for AC charging, meaning any portable charger with a Type 2 plug (the standard in AU) will work:

  • Tesla
  • BYD
  • MG
  • Kia
  • Hyundai
  • Volvo
  • Polestar

Emerging models that have adopted the local standards are:

  • Zeeker
  • Geely
  • Mazda
  • Suzuki
  • Toyota

While the plug fits, you must ensure the power source and charger match the vehicle’s needs:

  • The Plug - Must be Type 2 (7-pin circular design).
  • Phase Support - Most portable EV chargers are Single Phase. High-end 2026 EVs (like the Audi e-tron or Polestar 3) can take 3-Phase, but will still work on a single-phase portable unit, it will just be slower.
  • Amperage - Ensure your portable EV charger is adjustable. A Tesla can pull 32A, but if you plug into an old 10A farm socket in regional QLD, the charger must be dialed down to 8A to prevent a fire.

What Safety Features Should You Look For?

Australian Portable EV chargers need to adhere to Australian standards, and at EV Charger Installation, we ensure ours are. Portable EV chargers must have a type 2 connector, have a RCM certification, and be IP65 or IP67 for protection against water and dust.

Here are they key standards and safety features to look out for when purchasing a portable charger:

  • Plug Type: It must be an Australian standard 3-pin plug and typically be 10A or 15A.
  • Vehicle Connector: Type 2 is the standard for all new EV’s in Australia
  • Safety Certification: RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) is required
  • In-Cable Control and Protection Device: The control box must provide protection against leakage current, over-temperature, over voltage, and short circuits
  • IP Rating: A minimum of IP65 is recommended for portable, outdoor capable units to ensure safety in the rain.
  • Wiring Rules: While the device in portable, the outlet must comply with AS/NZS3000
